Example: Sustainable logistics thanks to AI
Imagine the huge warehouse of a large, international industrial group. Hundreds or even thousands of pallets and containers leave this warehouse every day to transport goods to customers or processing plants. Naturally, this process generates high levels of pollutant emissions – in warehouse management, during transport and ultimately along the entire supply chain.
Artificial intelligence can quickly identify from millions of goods-pack combinations those that minimise empty space during transport. Human planning cannot do this, the task is too complex. Even with just 15 different boxes, there would already be billions of different packing combinations.
✅ However, good AI applications can overcome this challenge almost in real time. As a result, immense amounts of wasted resources and emissions can be avoided along the supply chain. This is important because so-called “Scope 3 emissions” now account for over 70 per cent of a company’s total emissions.
